How accurate is this roof cost calculator?
It is a national-average ballpark from your inputs — useful for setting expectations, not for budgeting a specific job. Installed cost varies a lot by region, roof complexity, tear-off, and contractor. For a number tied to your actual roof, use an address-based measured quote.
How do I find my roof area if I only know my house's square footage?
Take the ground-floor footprint (roughly your single-story footprint, not total living area across floors) and multiply by about 1.1 for a low slope, 1.2 for a typical slope, or 1.35 for a steep roof. The calculator can do this for you.
Why is the range so wide?
Because at this stage it should be. Two 25-square roofs can differ by 30% on labor alone based on pitch, number of valleys, access, and how many layers have to come off. The range narrows after an inspection.
Does this include tear-off of the old roof?
The per-square ranges assume one layer of tear-off and disposal. Two or three layers, or significant decking repair, add to the cost.
